Hilton Head Island, SC - - Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) will present its annual awards next week during the PTR International Tennis Symposium. The event, which includes 50-plus on court and classroom presentations for tennis teachers and coaches, a trade show and tournament, will be held May 2-5, 2013, at the Sonesta Resort on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, USA.
Chuck Willenborg, of Fork, Maryland, has been named the PTR Jim Verdieck College Coach of the Year. He is the Director of Tennis Operations for Johns Hopkins University.
Willenborg, a former junior and NCAA champion, has quickly turned the Johns Hopkins tennis program into one of the best in the nation. The winningest coach in the history of both the Men's and Women's programs, he was named the Director of Tennis Operations in 2011. In December of 2012, Willenborg was named the USTA/ITA National Campus QuickStart Provider of the Year for his work with both the QuickStart and 10 and Under Tennis programs in Baltimore County.
In seven seasons as the Head Coach at Hopkins, Willenborg led the Men's and Women's teams to a combined 205-63 (.765) record, including a 113-7 (.942) mark in the Centennial Conference.
During his tenure with the programs, the Blue Jays have combined to win 13 Centennial Conference titles and have made 13 NCAA Tournament appearances. The Blue Jays have produced five Centennial Conference Players of the Year, 25 ITA All-Americans, 89 All-Conference selections, and more than 80 ITA Scholar-Athletes, as well as numerous nationally ranked singles players and doubles teams.
PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 14,000 members in 117 countries. It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization. PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and servicing tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
