Hilton Head Island, SC - - Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) presented its annual awards this week during the 2013 PTR International Tennis Symposium. The event, which includes 50-plus on court and classroom presentations for tennis teachers and coaches, a trade show and tournament, is being held May 2-5 at the new Sonesta Resort on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Saint Mary Health Management in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has been named PTR Private Facility of the Year. This award is presented to a PTR member in the United States who has shown dedication and diligence in promoting and supporting tennis and PTR.

Three clubs rest under the umbrella of Saint Mary Health Management, a hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Eight thousand members enjoy the flagship East Hills Athletic Club, its sister Orchard Hills Swim and Sports Club, and The Michigan Athletic Club, also known as The MAC. Through these clubs, Saint Mary Health Management inspires healthy lifestyles through fun, education, fitness, relationships and service.

Since 1972, East Hills’ 130,000 square foot multipurpose recreational facility has offered a wide array of family friendly health and fitness activities. Orchard Hills, home of the West Michigan Tennis Academy, has indoor and outdoor tennis. The MAC is a110,000 square foot multipurpose recreational fitness facility.

All three clubs have dedication and highly experienced staff. The entire tennis teaching staff is certified and 10 hold PTR Professional ratings. Seven of the pros have a second PTR certification in either 10 & Under Tennis or Performance, and in the last two years, five have attended the PTR International Tennis Symposium.

In addition to its academy for high level juniors, Saint Mary Health clubs have EZ Play Tennis Academy, Forest Hills Summer Tennis Academy, and have developed JCP (Junior Competitive Program) a competition pathway for players 10 and under. Fourteen of their tennis courts have permanent blue lines for youth play, perfect for the 500 kids from Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation who take tennis lessons at the clubs.

In 2012, Saint Mary Health clubs hosted four USTA Sanctioned orange ball and 20 yellow and green ball tournaments, as well as an ITF wheelchair tournament. The MAC has also been the host club for three PTR Certification Workshops.

PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 14,000 members in 117 countries. It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization. PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and servicing tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
