Rob Carvajal Named PTR Virginia Member of the Year
Hilton Head Island, SC - - Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) will present its annual awards next week during the 2018 PTR International Tennis Symposium. The event, which includes more than 40 educational presentations for tennis coaches, will be held February 13-16, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Rob Carvajal, of Centreville, Virginia, has been named PTR Member of the Year for the state. This award is presented to a PTR member who has shown dedication and diligence in promoting and supporting tennis and PTR. Interestingly Carvajal didn’t learn to play tennis until he was almost 30 years old.
Carvajal joined PTR in 1990, and was certified at PTR founder, Dennis Van der Meer’s tennis center on Hilton Head Island. Carvajal was well award that he was still new to the game. At that time, he was the varsity springboard diving coach at a high school. When the school needed a tennis coach, the athletic director turned to Carvajal. Humble beginnings, but doors started to open when people learned he was the high school coach.
As he learned more about the game, he was able to start coaching at area homeowner’s associations. His work ethic and drive lured people who had never played the game to come to the tennis courts. Word spread and so did his programs, and soon Carvajal was coaching stronger players.
“I kept notes about what worked and what didn't work,” Carvajal explained. “I put together a book of drills to use with my players.”
Each year his tennis program grew. He learned how to run multiple HOA programs simultaneously, and made sure all of his coaches were PTR trained. HI reputation spread. In 2009, the General Manager of The Four Seasons Tennis Club, in Fairfax, Virginia, called and Carvajal became the club’s Director of Adult Tennis.
“I wanted to do something new, different and fun, he told us. “I wanted to create a program that recognized that the average individual just wanted to hit hundreds of tennis balls and play out competitive points with other like-minded and skilled players.”
Carvajal created the RJ Tennis Boot Camp® and it has become the largest adult tennis program in the Washington DC metropolitan area. He now coaches hundreds of players each week.
“I am thrilled with the success of the program, and thankful that I was able to get a great foundation through the PTR program. Throughout the years, the people at PTR have always been there to give help and support whenever I needed it.”
PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 16,000 members in 125 countries. It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization. PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and serving tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
