Hilton Head Island, SC - - Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) will present its annual awards during the PTR International Tennis Symposium. The event, which includes more than 40 educational presentations for tennis coaches, will be held February 10-13, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
Mariaan De Swardt, of Spring, Texas, has been named PTR Member of the Year for the State. This award is presented to a member who has shown dedication and diligence in promoting and supporting tennis and PTR.
De Swardt’s career in tennis has spanned 32 years, during which she has been involved in all aspects of the tennis industry. Perhaps best known for more than a decade on the professional tour, De Swardt was ranked as high as #26 in the world in singles and #10 in doubles. She won the Australian Open Mixed Doubles in 1999. 2000 was a big year for De Swardt, as won Mixed Doubles at the French Open, made it to the Ladies Doubles finals at Wimbledon, and was named MVP for World Team Tennis. She is a four-time World Team Tennis Champion.
Upon retirement, De Swardt turned to management, commentating and coaching. For eight years, De Swardt served the Top 100 players in the world as a member of the WTA Board of Directors. She has been an on-air commentator for television, including Eurosport, USA Network, World Team Tennis and the South African Broadcasting network.
No stranger to awards, De Swardt was named WTA’s Most Impressive Newcomer in 1990 and in 1997 was voted WTA Comeback Player of the Year. She also received the South African Sportsman of the Year in 1999.
PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 16,000 members in 131 countries. It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization. PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and serving tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
