Alvin Cheng Named PTR Ohio Member of the Year


Hilton Head Island, SC - - Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) presented its annual awards today during the 2018 PTR International Tennis Symposium.  The event, which includes more than 40 educational presentations for tennis coaches, is underway February 13-16, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Alvin Cheng, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, has been named PTR Member of the Year for the state.  This award is presented to a PTR member who has shown dedication and diligence in promoting and supporting tennis and PTR.   Cheng, a PTR certified Professional since 2007, is second generation PTR.  His father Cheng Joo Chong was a member in Malaysia for more than 30 years.

Cheng is in his sixth season as the Assistant Men's and Women's Tennis Coach at Kenyon College.  Currently, the Kenyan Men are ranked #25 in the country, the Women are #30.  In 2013, they were the ITA Division III Men's Indoor National Champions, and in 2015 were DIII Men’s Doubles Champion.

Prior to Kenyan, Cheng had been the Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach at Coker College in Hartsville, South Carolina (2005-2010) and a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Eastern Kentucky University (2004-2005).  A former ITF Junior player (world ranked #396), Cheng was a four-year letter winner at EKU (1999-2003), where he was awarded the Ohio Valley Conference Sportsmanship Award in 2002.  

He currently owns Alvin Cheng Tennis; conducting camps, clinics and private lessons out of the Kenyon College facility.  In a joint effort with the Kokosing Valley Community Tennis Association, Cheng started an annual tennis tournament honoring one of Mount Vernon’s native sons, Frank Giampaolo.

PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 16,000 members in 125 countries.  It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization.  PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and serving tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
