Carroll ‘Spyke’ Henry Named PTR Maryland Member of the Year


Hilton Head Island, SC - - Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) presented its annual awards today during the 2018 PTR International Tennis Symposium.  The event, which includes more than 40 educational presentations for tennis coaches, is underway February 13-16, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Carroll ‘Spyke’ Henry, of Washington DC, has been named PTR Member of the Year for Maryland.  This award is presented to a PTR member who has shown dedication and diligence in promoting and supporting tennis and PTR.   Henry has been a PTR certified Professional for 25 years.  He is also a certified Pro with Tennis Whizz (5 and under). 

Henry is the Founder and CEO Smart Activities for Fitness & Education (S.A.F.E.), a community sports development organization that works with youth in the DC, Maryland and Virginia areas.  S.A.F.E. emphasizes developing responsible, respectable, student athletes through education, sports and cultural enrichment activities.  

Since 1993, the organization engaged more than 2,500 youth and parents in activities that have secured over $1,053,540 in college scholarship funds, as well as an additional $77,000 in private funds.  In 2017, four S.A.F.E. student athletes were inducted to the National Honor Society.

Also a high school tennis coach, Henry holds the record for most wins by any tennis coach in DCIAA history with an impressive record of 106-4.  He was a National Finalist for the USTA Starfish Award that recognizes coaches with no-cut programs, and was named High School Tennis Coach of the Year by the WTT Washington Kastles.  He was also a finalist for Tennis Coach of the Year by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association.
