Kelly Sykes Named PTR Young Professional of the Year

Hilton Head Island, SC - - Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) presented its annual awards yesterday during the 2018 PTR International Tennis Symposium.  The event, which includes more than 40 educational presentations for tennis teachers and coaches, is underway through February 18, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Kelly Sykes, of Alexandria, Virginia, has been named PTR Young Professional of the Year.   Sykes joined PTR in 2017, after receiving an ACE scholarship to attend a workshop.

In less than a year, Sykes has earned PTR certifications in all four education pathways (rating Professional in three), as well as completed Adaptive Tennis and Instructing Wheelchair Tennis certifications.  He traveled to four states to attend the workshops.  On top of that, Sykes has accumulated more than 160 hours of continuing education in his first year.  That’s dedication to education and to PTR!

Sykes, now 23, played tennis all four years at Edison High School in Alexandria, and made it to the semi-finals of the district tournament his senior year.  He was ranked 5th in his district and was voted overall MVP (Athlete of the Year) for the 2012-13 school year.  Armed with an academic scholarship to Shenandoah University, Sykes played in the Top 3 seeds beginning in his freshman year.

His love of the game lured him to coach tennis.  He worked as a Head Professional at Salamander Resort, and joined the coaching staff at Fredrick County Parks and Recreation, where he helped instruct juniors and adults for the Paralympics.  Last Spring, he was an instructor at Gainesville Tennis Academy and USTA Special Olympics Florida.  Currently, Sykes is Director of Junior Development with Blue Chip Tennis Academy.

PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 16,000 members in 125 countries.  It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization.  PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and serving tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
