Shelby Baron Named Wheelchair Professional of the Year

Hilton Head Island, SC - - Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) will present its annual awards during the PTR International Tennis Symposium.  The event, which includes more than 40 educational presentations for tennis coaches, was held February 11-15, on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Shelby Baron has been named PTR Wheelchair Professional of the Year.  Baron joins famed pros including, David Hall, Randy Snow, Rich Berman, Geoff Norton, Dan James, Paul Walker and others, who have received this honor.

A certified coach since 2013, we met Baron in 2011, when she played in the PTR Wheelchair Tennis Championships.  At the time, she hadn’t competed in many tournaments, and Hilton Head Island was a long way from her island nation home of Hawaii.  Fast forward to today when she often takes top prize!

The 2016 Paralympian plays for the University of Alabama.  She took home her third National collegiate team title at the 2018 Wheelchair Tennis Collegiate National Championships.  The 23-year-old Honolulu native placed second in her singles flight, earning four points for her team and helping the University of Alabama edge ahead to take the trophy.  Often seen playing on the ITF circuit, Baron has been ranked as high as singles #24 and #20 in Doubles.  At the end of the year, she won the Alabama Open ITF Futures event, taking home the Doubles win and was the Singles Finalist.  Baron has represented the USA at the ITF World Team Cup and is working toward the making the next Paralympic team.  Wheelchair tennis has taken Baron all over the world, and at 24, she is just getting started!

PTR is the largest global organization of tennis teaching professionals with more than 16,500 members in 125 countries.  It has the greatest percentage of multicultural and women members of any such organization.  PTR is dedicated to educating, certifying and serving tennis teachers and coaches around the world in order to grow the game.
